Purple Card Project are working with the NSW Environment Protection Authority, Wallsend Village, and the City of Newcastle to help reduce cigarette butt litter at several litter hotspots across Wallsend Village.

The issue

Cigarette butt litter is a significant problem, with an estimated 1.32 billion butts littered in New South Wales (NSW) annually. It’s the most common form of litter in the region, posing serious environmental and health concerns

Cigarette filters, composed of non-biodegradable plastic, can persist in the environment – harming wildlife and polluting waterways. Additionally, butt litter results in unsightly and dirty public spaces, and can become a fire hazard in dry conditions.

Tackling this issue involves public awareness, responsible disposal, and the collaboration of individuals, organisations and government at all levels.

Solutions for Wallsend Village include:

  • The installation of dedicated butt bins and signage at multiple locations

  • Community education and awareness initiatives

  • Enforcement strategies

  • Site-wide cleanups

  • Observing and monitoring progress by performing Butt Litter Checks
